W.A.Mozart
There is a large section of the classical music world that thinks that Mozart is the most over-rated of classical composers. Their argument goes something like this:
Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury. We have before us Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart the artist. Mozart the musician. Mozart the genius!
But I put it to you that this man is a fraud, a charlatan. An imposter even.
His music is likeable enough. Clever even. At times sparkling and brilliant. And nobody can deny that his output is extraordinary given his early demise. But, ladies and gentlemen, Mr Mozart's music lacks depth! Mozart's music is emotionally pedestrian, intellectually vacuous.
For an artist whose role it is to arouse the deepest feelings in a person, Mozart's music leaves us unaffected. It is window dressing, ear candy. Had elevators been invented in the late 1700's, Mozart's music would be playing through its speakers!
And yet he is touted as a God by some. The greatest of the great composers. He who cannot be surpassed.
Poor deluded fools. I venture that these are people who have recently stumbled upon classical music, find Mozart's music high on the instant-likability scale, always easy on the ear, never difficult or confronting. Never requiring more than two or three brain cells. And as such they have refused to explore beyond Mozart's narrow, shallow furrow.
No less an authority than my esteemed colleague Mr Glenn Gould has observed that Mozart was a tragic instance of a composer who died too late, rather than too early. The prosecution can but only agree and rests its case.
We have given the above argument free-reign for this article because it is a surprisingly common view. Classical internet newsgroup discussions bring the Mozart issue up on a regular basis, sarcastic detractors battling it out with fervent converts.
And also because the argument contains more than a grain of truth. Mozart
is easy on the ear, and his music
is best described as light and sparkling. The quintessential Mozart piece, the
Eine Kleine Nachtmusik is an example.
And with the phenomenal success of Peter Shaffer's movie
Amadeus, Mozart has brought more people to classical music than perhaps any other composer. Many of us then move on from Mozart to the more serious composers; Beethoven, Bach, Brahms, Mahler and their crowd.
The big tragedy is that some of us forget to go back to Mozart. Like his music or not, this article is a plea for all of us to revisit Mozart. And when we do, what treasures we will find!
In the early 1990's Phillips undertook a massive project, the Complete Mozart Edition, a collection of 181 CDs containing every piece of music Mozart ever wrote. The entire set is now not available, except in individual volumes, the total price of which would be well over $2000.
Fortunately, Phillips also released a 25 CD Boxed Set of the Best of the Complete Mozart Edition. For a much more reasonable price (less than $10 per disc!), you can have all the best-known works. You get:
- Symphonies - Numbers 25, 29, 31 (Paris), 35 (Haffner), 36 (Linz),38 (Prague), 39, 40 ,41 (Jupiter)
- Piano Concertos - Numbers 6, 9 (Jeunehomme), 14, 20, 21 (Elvira Madigan), 23, 26 (Coronation)
- Violin Concertos - Number 3, 4, 5
- Piano Sonatas - Numbers 8, 11 (Alla Turca), 15, 17
- Serenades etc - Eine kleine Nachtmusik, Serenata Notturna, Grand Partita etc
- A wealth of chamber music
- Vocal Music - Requiem, Coronation Mass, Missa Solemnis, Masonic Funeral Music
- Dozens of concert arias (including Exsultate, Jubilate) and lieder
- Opera highlights on a CD each - The Magic Flute, Idomeneo, Abduction from the Serail, The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, Cost Fan Tutte
And the performers are the best in their field. Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy feature on most of the orchestral works. Other names include Alfred Brendel plays the piano concerti, Mitsuku Uchida plays the piano sonatas, Sir Colin Davis conducts the operas, the Quartetto Italiano play much of the chamber music and many, many others.
Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury. My learned colleague has attempted to portray my client, Mr Mozart, as an amateur, a hack who churned out meaningless tune after mindless ditty.
I bring to you Exhibit A, The Best of the Complete Mozart Edition. Within it we have 148 pieces to refute the argument. Not just the obvious and powerful Requiem and Don Giovanni but less well-known but indescribably moving music that awaits discovery.
Who can listen to the slow movement of the Concerto for flute, harp & orchestra in C major, K. 299 without being brought to tears? Who can say that the Serenade for 13 Winds, with its slowly growing power, is mindless? Or the exquisite String Trio K.563?
There is so much to marvel at in this set. The string quartets, the most intricate and revealing ever written before Beethoven, the Clarinet Concerto, the darkly powerful Masonic Funeral Music, the glorious Masses. And of course the operas, the greatest spectacles of music written in that form.
Anyone who says that Mozart's music is without depth or feeling is revealing more about themselves than about Mozart. The defence rests.
This is a handsome boxed set of uniformly beautiful performances. For the beginner this is a set to explore. For the seasoned music lover, a set to rediscover the joy of Mozart.
